My Android App Recommendations

A couple of weeks ago, I got my first ever Android device - the Nexus 7. Here are three fairly geeky apps I like... and I'm not going for popular, or even necessarily useful apps - just three that, if you're even the slightest bit geeky, you might want to try.

This is a great app for the xkcd webcomic. Free, no ads. Saves each comic to your device as you view it (if you want), allows you to read the mouseover text by long-pressing the comic, and also works with the What-If blog (including the mouseover texts there). It can even alert you when a comic or what-if goes online.

This is an unusual, but useful app if you have any Apple devices - it makes your Android device appear as an AirPlay device on your network. You can create your own set of AirPlay speakers by simply plugging your Android device into some standard external speakers, and then stream music through those speakers from iTunes or your iDevice, assuming the device supports AirPlay. Of course you could also use an Android device as AirPlay earphones in much the same way. This app is also free with no ads :)

This app, by the people who created Evernote, allows you to capture and annotate photos, webpages, and maps, and also allows you to create your own quick sketches. Can be quite useful...

So that's it for now - and if you have app recommendations for me, do leave them in the comments :)
